Splatoon 2 is a first party Nintendo game. It is the sequel to the Wii U third-person shooter Splatoon. The game includes both a story-driven single-player mode and online multiplayer.
Despite being a shooter, Splatoon 2 is non-violent. Instead of firing bullets, you use ink. Wikipedia describes the gameplay this way:
Players control characters called Inklings, who have the ability to shapeshift between human and squid forms. In humanoid form, Inklings can shoot ink in their team’s color, which can be used to cover the environment or “splat” opposing players or enemies. Transforming into a squid allows players to swim through the ink of their own color, even up walls and through grates, hiding from the enemy and replenishing their ink supply in the process. Conversely, enemy ink is much slower to move across in humanoid form, cannot be swum through in squid form, and gradually deals damage. Players can use their ink to try and “splat” their opponents, which will send them back to their team’s starting point whilst also providing a large splat of ink.
Splatoon 2 has received mostly positive reviews from critics. It is currently averaging an 83 out of 100 on review aggregator OpenCritic.
Eurogamer says that Splatoon 2 is “an improvement in nearly every way on one of Nintendo’s finest games in years.” GameRadar says that although “Splatoon 2’s formula no longer feels original, but it looks great, its controls are tight, and there’s enough variety to give you dozens of hours of multiplayer fun.”
